History

Castel dell'Aquila, an imposing fortified structure transformed into a residence by the Malaspina family, stands on a hill overlooking the picturesque medieval village of Gragnola, located at the junction of the Aulella and Lucido streams. The origins of this settlement are uncertain, but it is believed to have been established to control medieval roadways in the area. Its strategic position, offering panoramic views over the Lunigiana region, suggests the presence of earlier settlements by the Ligurian-Apuan and Roman peoples.

Although no documents clarify the construction phases, the current structure presents itself as a quadrilateral keep with four floors. Adjacent to the keep are three corner towers, including the northwest one, which serves as the main entrance to the internal courtyard, renovated during the Renaissance. The courtyard, protected by a forewall, features a grand entrance with a double sandstone portal and side arrow slits.

The 14th century marked a crucial period for the castle, which became a marquisate seat and took the name Castel dell’Aquila, given to a branch of the Malaspina family. Figures like Spinetta Malaspina and Leonardo I are tied to this period of transformation when the castle evolved from a modest structure into a prestigious residence. The keep, or an earlier version of it, may date back to the 13th century, while its current size and shape are the result of subsequent renovations.

Among the most significant modifications is the construction of the outer defensive wall between the 15th and 16th centuries, required to adapt medieval defenses to the use of firearms. The castle’s entrance was completely restructured: a new external path, protected by a turret and a barbican, led to a second doorway with a round arch, ensuring an effective defensive system.

A passionate ten-year restoration project has returned Castel dell'Aquila to its former glory. The castle stands in a position of great relevance and beauty, dominating the village of Gragnola at 210 meters above sea level.
