The exhibition of medieval clothes in the impressive medieval hall of Castel dell'Aquila offers a fascinating journey back in time to the 15th century. Here, visitors can admire a selection of clothes belonging to the aristocratic class, made of valuable natural fabrics such as silk, velvet and textiles.
Tailoring of the time was characterised by the use of a shirt underneath, made of linen or silk. This practice not only preserved the beauty of the clothes, but also reduced the need for frequent washing, an essential detail to maintain the elegance of the garments. The garments on display are embellished with beading made of precious yarns, further enhancing their value and refinement.
A fascinating aspect of the fashion of the time is the colours, which reflected the social class of the wearers. Fabrics in more muted, faded or dull tones were typical of the less affluent classes, while the nobility sported fabrics in intense, bright colours, a symbol of wealth and prestige. Among the most precious natural dyes used were red and black, while fabrics worked in white or very light shades were reserved exclusively for the noble class, due to their delicacy.
The exhibition not only celebrates the art of mediaeval fashion, but also offers a glimpse into the life and social hierarchies of the time, allowing visitors to fully understand the meaning and value of each dress on display. An immersive experience that fascinates and enchants, inviting each visitor to discover the secrets of an extraordinary era.
